Teachers at every grade level find themselves teaching it to students, and sometimes being called on to give a speech to a group of parents. As a career educator and principal, I know the difficulty of opening up time for speech preparation, and offer this organic gardening speech for your use. Feel free to edit it to fit your needs.

Organic Gardening Speech

How selfish are you? On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the highest, how selfish would you rate yourself? If you are the least bit selfish, you might be interested in organic gardening.

An organic gardening speech might seem more appropriate coming from a Home Economics teacher, but I am just selfish enough that I love organic gardening. I want to share that love with you and with your children.

Imagine

I want you to come with me, in imagination, to a time and place before the Industrial Revolution. The year is 1707. It is late summer. We find ourselves walking the streets of a small town. Houses are spaced well apart for privacy. Land stretches out behind each house. As we look, we notice that much of that land is taken up by gardens. Here and there, we see both adults and children actively engaged in gardening. The plants are beautiful.

You call to one of the adults and ask what they use to make the garden so lush. A broad smile breaks, and through the smile come the words, “Feed the soil, and the soil will feed the plants.”

You shake your head. Poor people. Too bad they don’t know about that miracle combination of chemicals you saw advertised on TV last week. That’s the easy way to grow spectacular plants!

Dinner

The organic gardener invites us to join them for the evening meal, and we accept. At dinner, we join in the prayer of thanks, and then watch in amazement as the children, one after another, begin eating fresh vegetables.

You yourself are not that fond of vegetables, but you politely take a small serving of each. You bite into a leaf of steamed cabbage, and your eyes open wide in amazement. It is sweet – twice as sweet as the cabbage you buy at your local market! You watch a small child fill his mouth with dark green kale, and shudder. There’s a small spoonful of the nasty vegetable on your own plate, and you pick at it, putting a single small leaf in your mouth. Amazing! It, too, is twice as sweet as any kale you ever ate. The same seems true of every vegetable on the table. You decide that if your supermarket vegetables were this good, you would eat a lot more of them.

Our imaginary trip ends at that dinner table, and we return to the present.

Organic Gardening’s Benefits

Organic gardening has many benefits. If you are completely selfish, you will want those benefits for yourself. If you are unselfish, you will want those benefits for your family. Let me give you just three of organic gardening’s benefits.

1. Taste: Organic gardening has been proven to produce tastier fruits and vegetables. A Hong Kong study measured Brix levels, the percentage of sugar in plant juices, using produce from organic gardening and from non-organic gardening. The results showed that organic gardening produced produce that was 2 to 4 times as sweet as that produced by non-organic gardening. Sweeter fruits and vegetables are tastier, and easier to eat, whether you are a young person or an adult. Organic gardening helps us eat better by providing tastier fruits and vegetables.

2. Nutrition: Organic gardening has also been found to provide nutritionally superior produce. Virginia Worthington, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, compared the composition of vegetables grown simultaneously under different farming conditions. Her work included 41 studies with 1,240 comparisons of 35 vitamins and minerals. Worthington found that organic gardening produced vegetables and fruits that were higher in most minerals and vitamins than those from non-organic gardening. Not only that, organic gardening produce was lower in potentially harmful nitrates, which result from nitrogen fertilizers. Dr. Worthington concluded that produce from organic gardening is nutritionally superior. You and your family will enjoy better health with fruits and vegetables from organic gardening. Organic gardening gets you into the sunlight where you can absorb essential vitamin D. Organic gardening is a great stress management tool. Organic gardening gives you an outlet for creativity. It provides satisfaction as you see your work produce useful fruits, herbs, and vegetables.

We could talk about the aesthetic pleasures of organic gardening – how beautiful that garden might become. We could talk about how you can save money with organic gardening – growing your produce instead of purchasing.

Finally, we could talk about how important it is for our children to learn about organic gardening, to embrace it as the way to better health, and to practice it with school, home, and community gardens.

An organic gardening speech could go on for hours, but I’m going to stop here, hoping that I have whetted your appetite enough that you will seek out more information on organic gardening.

So, contrary to popular belief, it’s not more oxygen that we need but more carbon dioxide! Furthermore, the deep breathing so frequently advised for health purposes only makes matters worse by provoking hyperventilation. This is why so many people complain of anxiety or other ill effects encountered through deep breathing.

The Buteyko method seeks to redress this by balancing the body’s levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide. It achieves this by teaching practitioners to inhale through the nose rather than through the mouth, to significantly slow their rate of breathing and to breathe much more shallowly than most people tend to do.

Breathing shallowly may seem counter-intuitive but the effects of too much oxygen are clear. Each of the recommended changes in breathing helps to limit the amount of oxygen we take in while increasing levels of carbon dioxide. The result is a better balance of gases and thus healthier blood chemistry, all of which produces an increased feeling of wellbeing.

So what does this mean for sufferers of high blood pressure? Medical experts know that gas levels and other aspects of blood chemistry play a vital role in regulating blood pressure. And of course our breathing is largely responsible for delivering the correct balance of gases.

Sciatica – Don’t Let It Bench Your Activity

Like some of my patients over 40, you may begin to experience pain on one side of your hips/buttocks, some numbness or tingling running down your leg, or even weakness in your legs. You may find it harder and harder to sit comfortably or even have sharp pain when trying to stand or walk. If this sounds like you, you may have an increasingly common condition called sciatica – a cluster of symptoms that points to herniated or degenerating, spinal disks.

Sciatica affects people over age 30 and is almost always the result of a problem with the lower spinal disks causing radiculopathy, or compression/irritation, of the sciatic nerve that sends pain and/or tingling, numbness down into the legs. Let’s talk about what causes lower spinal disk problems.

Causes of Sciatica

As I tell my patients, sciatica is not really a diagnosis in itself, rather a condition that includes several symptoms that can have different causes. Here are the most common of those causes:

1. Herniated lumbar disc – sudden twisting motions, or impact injuries, of lumbar, spinal disks causes the inner disc to bulge out between disks. This bulging puts pressure on surrounding nerves, the sciatic being the most prominent.

2. Lumbar spinal stenosis – a hardening, or “stenosing” of the spinal disks causes it to become inflexible and rub against the sciatic nerve. Most common in people over 60, but can occur earlier in athletes and people in occupations with a lot of impact shock to the spine.

3. Degenerative disk disease – degeneration of the disk can occur normally with the aging process. The edges can be rough and irritate the surrounding nerves.

4. Isthmic spondylolisthesis – a big medical name for when a disk is injured and falls out of place, sliding over another. The loss of space between the two disks can compress the nerve exiting the disks at this level and cause pain and irritation.

5. Piriformis syndrome – the piriformis muscle extends across the buttock. The nerve root, that includes the sciatic nerve, can get pinched or irritated as it runs beneath the piriformis down to the thighs.

6. Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction – irritation of the sacroiliac joint can irritate the lumbar nerves and cause sciatic-like symptoms.

Other less common causes of sciatica can be pregnancy, muscle strain, spinal tumors, scar tissue from previous injuries, or infection.

Treatments for Sciatica

For my patients who have sciatica, almost always, treatment will include some sessions with a physical therapist who will design specific exercises to address the condition causing it. That is why correct diagnosis of what is causing the sciatica is crucial.

The good news about sciatica is that it almost always gets better in a few days to weeks after starting exercise treatment. Depending on the cause of your sciatica, it could take up to 12 weeks to fully resolve. You may still continue to experience flare-ups of it as well. Some particular causes, like nerve entrapment that doesn’t respond to exercise, or even chiropractic, may require surgery to return the nerve to its proper position.

Some Things You Can Do To Help Yourself

Heat or Ice – Apply either heat or ice packs, or alternate between the two, depending on which feels best to you. Do this for about 20 minutes then repeat every 2 hours when sciatica flare first begins.

Over the counter pain remedies – Such as ibuprofen, can be helpful.

Homeopathic pain remedies – Arnica or Traumeel, sold at better health food stores, can help relieve symptoms without the side effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Magnesium – 500 mg of magnesium can help relieve pain causing inflammation.

Quercetin – Another herbal anti-inflammatory helps relieve inflammation.

Vitamin B1 and B6 – Helps relieve nerve irritation and numbness.

Vitamin C – 1000 mg a day also helps to relieve inflammation.

Calcium – Optimal calcium helps prevent deterioration of bone and spinal disks.

Vitamin D – Insufficient Vitamin D can contribute to spinal disk, as well as overall bone and joint degeneration as your body will not be able to use calcium very well.

It’s amazing how many really good athletes do not take into account the pre-race nutrition strategies for winning or at least a good, injury free, an event.
